On October 11, we commemorate the uncovering of the relics of Holy New Martyr Grand Duchess Elisabeth Feodorovna, the Heavenly Patroness of our Convent.

On the night of 18 July, 1918, the Grand Duchess Elisabeth Feodorovna was thrown alive into an old mine near Alapaevsk together with several other members of the Royal family. 

They were Great Prince Sergius Mikhailovich and his steward Theodore Remez, Great Princes John Constantinovich, Igor Constantinovich, Constantine Constantinovich, Prince Vladimir Paley and Nun Barbara, Elisabeth Feodorovna’s cell attendant. All died painful deaths from thirst, hunger and wounds. 

Three months after the martyrs’ death the White Army liberated Alapaevsk, the place of their martyrdom was found and the remains of the martyred ones were removed.

The three fingers of St Elisabeth’s right hand were folded as if she had been trying to make the sign of the cross. An icon of the Saviour was found on her chest. 

The holy martyrs Elisabeth Feodorovna and Nun Barbara were laid to rest according to the will of the Grand Duchess in the Holy Land, in Jerusalem, in the Russian Convent of Gethsemane.
